Homo No Mo!?! Gender, Orientation & the Ex-Gay Movement

Having spent 17 years and over $30,000 on three different continents attempting to change and suppress his gay orientation and gender differences, Peterson Toscano presents a lively workshop about the ex-gay movement and the often-tragic outcomes of pursuing such a change.

Interjecting scenes from his one-person comedy Doin' Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway HouseHow I Survived the Ex-Gay Movement, along with personal narrative, and the most current information about the ex-gay movement, Peterson's interactive presentation leaves his audience informed and better equipped to address false claims of the Ex-Gay Movement and build a strong LGBT community.

The Importance of a Support System

A.C., along with Michael Brown, will share how each transitioned; one having the full support of his family, and the other with no family support. These two men will open up about their personal struggles and their personal journeys and how it affected their family and friends.  They will talk about how they've overcome heartaches, disappointment, depression and rejection. Also to be discussed is the importance of a support system for all trans-identified persons who have made or are contemplating this journey. They will share ways in which family and friends can help in transition for both female to male individuals and male to female individuals. The stories are different, but the goal is the same.

Stop the hate. Educate: Transphobia vs. Transadvocacy.
Transgender Day of Remembrance is more than a vigil, it is an opportunity. Margaux Ayn Schaffer will discuss transphobia and transgender advocacy, past and present. Margaux co-authored an op-ed in the early 1990s for THE ADVOCATE, "Transgender Hate Crimes: a Growing Problem." She was the first out transwoman to be appointed by the mayor to be on the city of Atlanta's Gay and Lesbian task force, making it a GLBT task force.

Trans-forming the Movement: Turning Ill-Equipped Allies into Effective Advocates
Transgender people across America are working like never before to advance our civil rights, but we can't do it alone.  Our allies are passionate, but unaccustomed to advocating for interests that aren't their own.  They often feel completely unprepared to advocate for us - and occasionally make blunders that threaten to set back our cause.  What are the best strategies for turning well-intentioned but ill-equipped allies into effective advocates for transgender equality?

Drawing on her experiences as the staff lead for transgender concerns at the nation's largest LGBT civil rights organization, Allyson Robinson will explore the barriers to cooperation that exist in the LGBT community and draw out methods for overcoming them.

Overcoming our Own Bigotries
The purpose behind the forming of the LGBT community was to share our experiences and embrace our differences. It was meant to be a community where support was given and received, a place for camaraderie, a safe haven from the torments of heterosexual society, and a mentor for the naive. Unfortunately, our own bigotries got in the way and we began to branch off into our own sub-communities, digressing from our ultimate goal of becoming accepted members of society. Why did this happen? This workshop is designed to help us understand, educate and discover new ideas of how to reunite and become one again. For, if we ever hope to be accepted, we first need to accept each other.
